About Prof. Mohamed Rela
Prof. Mohamed Rela is a globally renowned liver transplant surgeon with more than four decades of surgical experience. He has been instrumental in shaping liver transplantation and hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) surgery in India and internationally. He founded the Dr. Rela Institute & Medical Centre (RIMC) in Chennai in 2018, a quaternary care hospital known for advanced multi-organ transplantation, complex hepatobiliary surgery, and comprehensive multi-specialty services. Prof. Rela first gained international attention when he performed a successful liver transplant on a five-day-old newborn, which was recognized in the Guinness Book of Records as one of the youngest patients ever to undergo this procedure.
He has pioneered advanced surgical methods such as split liver transplantation, auxiliary liver transplantation, and mono-segment grafts, which have been adopted worldwide for expanding the donor pool and improving outcomes in paediatric patients. Today, he leads one of the largest liver transplant programs in South Asia, performing hundreds of adult and paediatric liver transplants annually, while continuing to publish influential research and train the next generation of transplant surgeons.
